Seattle Events Fun for the Whole Family
When summer arrives in the Emerald City, the town comes alive. People abandon their raincoats and umbrellas for sunscreen and sandals. And the area doesn’t disappoint: there are all sorts of fun things to do.
If you’re looking for activities that are family-oriented, Seattle offers those, too. Here are some of our favorites:
Make Music Seattle
Make Music Seattle is a world-wide music celebration that takes place on the Summer Solstice, June 21st. It celebrates the longest day of the year with music makers of every type and age. It’s open to everyone (performers and visitors) and goes for the entire day, from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Maryville Strawberry Festival
The Maryville Strawberry Festival celebrates – you guessed it – strawberries. It takes place June 16-18 and promotes volunteerism, community spirit, as well as everything strawberry. It offers lots of options – a kids’ parade and a shortcake eating contest just to name a few.
The Wooden Boat Festival
The Wooden Boat Festival shoves off July 1st and lasts through the 4th. It celebrates the maritime heritage of Washington and the surrounding states, and offers a chance for people to ride on the water while learning about the trade. Most of the events are free to the public.
Japan Fair is located right outside of Seattle in Bellevue, Washington. It celebrates Japanese art and culture with music, pottery, hands on exhibits, vendor booths, and philosophy. It takes place on July 8th and 9th at Meydenbauer Center Hall.
Fleet Week at Seafair
Fleet Week comes to Seattle the first week of August (the 1st through the 6th). A tradition since 1950, it’s one of the most popular summertime festivals. The week includes the Parade of Ships, ship tours, and a chance to honor the men and women who have served and are presently serving the nation. The events are free and open to the public.
The summer in Seattle offers a chance for locals and tourists to go out and celebrate the beauty of the Northwest. These events are perfect for families of all sizes and interests. Of course, if they don’t entice, there’s always the Space Needle to fall back on. 😉
